ABOUT OUR DENTISTRY WORK EXPERIENCE PROJECTS.

Premed Projects sole aim is to provide students interested in healthcare careers aged 14+ with some hospital work experience that isn’t available anywhere else. On our residential projects you’ll live with students from all over the world interested in healthcare and shadow dentists Mon-Fri – achieving a minimum of 40 hours worth of work experience.

You will get to experience all kinds of departments during your dentistry Premed Project and will have the chance to learn from dentists by shadowing them during their working week. You will see many different procedures during your project such as:

  • Root canals
  • Extractions
  • Denture fittings
  • Fillings
  • Dental implants
  • Dental crowns
  • Teeth whitening procedures

Before you go, our head office team will work with you to place you in departments that you have an interest in or simply let us choose the departments for you that will offer a great, broad experience of dentistry. We’ll then appoint you with a senior dentist at our project hospitals who will guide you throughout your shadowing experience.

You’ll shadow your appointed dentist in groups of no more than 3 students so you’ll get ample opportunity to ask questions and build up a rapport with both the dentists and patients, without the fear of overcrowding.

PREMED PROJECTS – DENTISTRY WORK EXPERIENCE IN THAILAND.

Dentistry work experience in Thailand takes place in several different dental hospitals, meaning you get a huge insight into life as a dentist and a chance to see many different techniques and differing standards of healthcare in the country.

Thailand has a wonderful reputation for training dentists and you’ll see why first-hand during your project. Highly skilled dental surgeons will leave you in awe at their accuracy and dexterity and you’ll also find some of the friendliest dentists around, always happy to answer your questions and inform you about patient history notes or provide reasons for their diagnoses.

We’ll take you first to shadow dentists in a government dental hospital based in Chiang Mai. A large 520 bed hospital, with attached dental hospital, you’ll see how dentists juggle the large number of patients arriving through their doors. With a large accident and emergency department too this is fast paced dentistry at it’s best. Towards the end of your first week we’ll also show you the largest private hospital in Chiang Mai, brimming with the very latest in diagnostic equipment and where resources are plentiful. Thailand is a huge destination for medical tourism with many westerners arriving for dental cosmetic surgery to benefit from cutting edge medical techniques at prices much cheaper than their own countries.

In your second week we’ll take you to a more rural dental hospital in the northern hill town of Chiang Mai. Ayurvedic medicine is popular here as are holistic approaches to medicine & dentistry too. How does a dentist treat a patient who rejects western healthcare and instead firmly believes in natural remedies for their ailment? You’ll see all the skills needed to be a dentist on show here, empathy, patience, determination, hard work and an ability to handle pressure situations. The hospital staff and patients are used to seeing students in and around the wards as it’s also a teaching hospital for the local medical and dental school so all the dentists are also very used to talking to students and always show a real interest in you and your motivations for wanting to become a dentist

Seeing these different hospitals couldn’t be more of a contrast, reflecting well a country full of contrasts and disparity. An important part of your project is seeing both sides of the coin and see how dentistry works in this part of the world, which will ultimately help you understand healthcare better.

We also offer a 1 day dentistry event in London for all students where you can spend an intensive day learning from dentists and dental students in the setting of a simulation suite, learning all about the application routes into studying dentistry and then gaining some practical dentistry experience in the afternoon.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR CLINICAL SHADOWING WITH US.

A huge part of being a dentist is complying to medical ethics and as all Premed Projects students are untrained in dentistry we offer shadowing, observational experiences for students. The dentists responsible for the clinical care of each patient determine the extent of each students’ participation, taking into account the relevant clinical protocols. You will be allowed to perform non-obtrusive medical procedures under the watchful eye of dentists such as holding medical clamps in place, assisting with patients movement, blood pressure monitoring, helping to interpret X-rays & many more simple clinical procedures. As well as being involved in these procedures, you should watch, learn and ask questions of your appointed dentist to make the most of your opportunity of clinical shadowing with us.
